Mission Statement

The presence of a highly trained, highly skilled police tactical unit has been shown to be a life saving resource that can substantially reduce the risk of injury and loss of life to citizens, police officers and suspects, when called upon to assist in the resolution of critical incidents. It is the intent of the Independence County Sheriff’s Department to establish such a unit.

The primary responsibility of the S.W.A.T. unit is the resolution of difficult police situations outside the realm of the ordinary patrol response, through the use of developed skills, tactics and specialized equipment / capabilities. The secondary responsibility of the S.W.A.T. unit will be to provide a wide range of police services, in furtherance of departmental goals and objectives.

SWAT School April 14-18, 2008

Sheriff Keith Bowers and the Independence County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team will be hosting and conducting a SWAT School on April 14-18 of 2008. Successful graduates will walk away with a solid understanding of current and evolving SWAT tactics and techniques as well as identifying each student and teams areas needing improvement. Graduates will also be certified in the deployment of Diversionary Devices (flashbangs) and chemical munitions.
Registration is strictly limited to 25 students.
