NEWS RELEASE INDEPENDENCE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT DATE: October 19, 2007 RED RIBBON WEEK SET TO BE OBSERVED OCTOBER 22-26, 2007 The week of October 22-26, 2007 will be observed nationally as Red Ribbon Week to educate America’s youth on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. First begun as a grassroots effort in 1986, it is expected over 80 million people will participate in Red Ribbon Week activities this year. Red Ribbon Week was began as an effort to educate children about drug abuse in memory of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique Camarena. SA Camarena was abducted, tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in 1985 while on an assignment in Mexico. Citizen’s Bank of Batesville has donated wrist bands with the inscription ‘Proud to be Drug Free’ to local schools. Every schoolchild in Independence County will receive a wrist band. School Resource Officers from the Independence County Sheriff’s Department will visit local schools during the week to hand out wrist bands and speak to students. ###
