NEWS RELEASE INDEPENDENCE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT DATE: October 19, 2007 FIRST D.A.R.E. GRADUATION OF THE SCHOOL YEAR ANNOUNCED The first D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduation of the school yearfor the Batesville School District will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at 1:00 pm in the Batesville Sixth Grade Campus auditorium. A special agent from the Little Rock field office of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will be our guest speaker. D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) began in 1983 in Los Angeles, CA by the Los Angeles Police Department. D.A.R.E. is now taught in 75% or our nation’s school districts. A police-officer led series lessons, the D.A.R.E. curriculum teaches kids about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs. D.A.R.E. also teaches kids about peer pressure and how to resist drug offers. Positive alternatives to drug use are emphasized in order to live drug-free lives. D.A.R.E. is being taught for the very first time this year in the Batesville School District. ###
