NEWS RELEASE INDEPENDENCE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT DATE: September 5, 2004 STATE AGENCY ISSUES ADVISORY TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES ON ENFORCEMENT OF FICTITIOUS LICENSE PLATES On August 31, 2004 the Independence County Sheriff’s Department received a letter which went to all Arkansas law enforcement agencies from the State of Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration concerning the use of fictitious license plates by motorists. The letter specifically described plates made by auto dealers, usually with their advertisement on it, being displayed on the rear portion of motor vehicles. The DFA has deemed these types of license plates to be illegal because the only type of license plate that may be displayed on the rear is one that has been issued by DFA. Arkansas state law does not regulate what may be displayed on the front of the vehicle. The letter stated all auto dealers in Arkansas have been advised to discontinue this practice.
